Chapter 14

Travis

Oh. Shit.

Claire stood frozen with her T-shirt clutched to her chest. She stared without blinking while I desperately tried to come up with something to say. My thoughts raced as I tried to determine if she recognized it, or if she’d simply misunderstood the situation. There was a chance she hadn’t gotten a very good look, and here I was, on my knee with a diamond in my hand. That could quite easily explain her panicked reaction.

It was crazy how quickly things changed. Moments ago, the kitchen had been filled with moans and the scent of sex, and now…anxiety flooded the room with a hint of apprehension and fear.

“It’s not what it looks like,” I muttered and then cursed myself for not being able to come up with anything better. After all, that’s what one would usually say when they were caught cheating. So I shook my head, took a deep breath, and tried again. “I can explain.”

Yeah, because that was an improvement, dipshit.

I wouldn’t be surprised if I’d actually rolled my eyes at myself. But to be fair, my blood hadn’t fully returned to the appropriate places yet, and my thoughts were still consumed with the memory of being inside her. I hated that this situation might ruin what we’d just shared.

“Well, I sure hope so.” Her tone was normal, but her expression remained robotic.

I stood, fully aware that neither of us wore a stitch of clothing, and clenched my fist, feeling the prongs pinch my palm. “Earlier today, at your grandfather’s house—”

“That house is technically mine…but go ahead.”

My mouth opened and closed a few times as I tried to gather my bearings. I wasn’t sure which direction to go in: explain why I had the ring or ask about the house. My curiosity won out in the end. “Your house?”

“Yeah, I’ll explain later. After you tell me why you have that.” She pointed to my closed hand.

“Oh, yeah…” I shook my head, annoyed at myself for my inability to say anything intelligent. “Like I was saying, earlier today at the party, your grandfather pulled me aside. He didn’t tell me why at first, but then he gave me this.”

I opened my hand for her to see the ring.

She picked up the band between two fingers and stared at the glittering jewels. Familiarity flashed in her eyes, but to my surprise, her expression remained nearly emotionless. I didn’t understand. After what Piper said about how Claire hadn’t dealt with the loss of her parents, I half-expected her to at least display some sort of emotion. But there was nothing, not even the faintest hint of a tear.

“I couldn’t say no without a realistic reason, and I didn’t have one, so…”

“When were you planning to tell me?”

“I’m not sure. I’ve struggled with that ever since he gave it to me. I didn’t want to upset you by forcing you wear it, so I decided to wait until I had time to sort everything out.”

She tilted her head and looked at me quizzically.
